History of the Homestead
____________________________
This was the humble home of famous Canadian heroine Laura Secord. She lived here from 1803 till 1835, right through the years that were the War of 1812. This is where her famous hike to warn the British soldiers began.
The Americans came to Queenston and ransacked the town, taking many homes, including Laura’s. She journeyed over 32 kilometres (about 20 miles) across rough and uneven terrain, up the heights, to the Decew House and the station of Lieutenant FitzGibbon and his men. It was her information that allowed the British to be ready for an attack.
In 1971, the Laura Secord Chocolate Company purchased and restored the home. They gifted it to the Niagara Parks Commission in 1998.
Ghosts of War
____________________________
On occasion, tour guides in the house have heard voices. These otherworldly sounds lead most up to a second floor bedroom, where many have seen the figure of a woman standing by the bed.
In the master bedroom, Laura’s husband James recuperated after the battle of Queenston Heights. In this room witnesses have heard the cries of a man in extreme pain.
A visitor to the house was on the second floor when he heard commotion downstairs. It sounded like a group of people ransacking the house. Plates smashed and items were being knocked about as he slowly made his way down the stairs and into the kitchen. Expecting to see smashed bits everywhere, he was instead greeted by a clean, perfect room, and an empty house.
