History of the Fort
________________________

Fort Mississauga never saw a shot fired.  It was built in 1814, after the Americans retreated and burned Niagara-on-the-Lake.  The British rushed its construction to discourage the Americans from attacking again, as Fort George was still in ruins.

Soldiers remained on-duty at Fort Mississauga until 1840.

Today, the fort is located at the back of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Course.  The fort was never restored or ever opened to the public.

You can visit it, but be careful of flying golf balls!

The Historic Ghosts
________________________

Even though there was never a battle waged, or shot fired, the lands around the
fort did see action, as did most of the town.  If you stand in the right spot by the river, you’ll hear gunfire and the screams of men swirling around your head.

People have also heard screams of men attributed to a punishment known as flogging.  This was a whipping for soldiers who defied command during the War.

In 1871, a soldier named Andrew wrote down his encounter with a ghost…

“Jim and I spread our blankets on the hard oak floor and slept as sound as a top. We had to turn out at 2am.  Jim was put on the gate and I on the ramparts.  It was pitch dark and time dragged.  The only sound that broke the stillness was the waves.  We saw in that long two hours a dog and a tall figure in a black robe.  It glided along the top of the wall swiftly and was seen by Jim as well as myself. My knees shook under me. I fixed my bayonet, gave chase but it glided out of sight.  We said nothing about it, being afraid of the ridicule.”
