History of the hotel
_________________________
Built in 1864 by William Long, this luxury hotel was once only $6 a night. Today the rate is closer to $300; something that will never deter the resident ghost, who has remained for 200 years.
In 1899, it was called The Niagara House. In 1901 the hotel was renamed The Prince of Wales in honour of a royal visit.
Molly McGuire
_________________________
The ghost of the Prince of Wales Hotel is Molly McGuire. She’s proof that ghosts affect the land as much as they do the building.
During the American siege of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a young soldier was told to search the wooden house once located on this land.
The first floor was clear. He moved to the second, swung open the bedroom door and saw a figure by the window. He panicked and rushed forward, bayonet raised, he ran through what he thought was a British soldier. That’s when he noticed long flowing brown hair. He had murdered an innocent woman.
This was Molly McGuire standing by her front window, as she always did, looking to the lake with the hope of her husband’s safe return.
Today Room 207 is in the exact location of that bedroom, a room known for its ghostly activity.
