Haunted
Willard Library
Evansville, Indiana
by
Anna Wright
Field Consultant for Danville, Illinois
The
oldest library in Evansville, Indiana was built in 1885. A beautiful
Victorian Gothic building, still open to this day, was named after the
man who had it built, Willard Carpenter.
Designed
by James and Merritt Reid, this architectural wonder was later to become
Willard Library, receiving an induction into the National Register of
Historic places in 1972. This historical building had a very interesting
past indeed.
It
is said that a ghost haunts the library. Some say the ghost is that
of Willard Carpenter's daughter Louise. During life, history tells that
Willard had a terrible fight with Louise, so bad that she was soon taken
out of his will. The legend of the Gray Lady holds that if the library
is turned over to the rightful living heirs of Willard Carpenter, the
hauntings will then stop. Many have claimed to see the Louise, also
known as the Lady in Gray (she appears as a shadowy gray figure and
soon disappears) in the children's room and research room.
Sixty
years ago marked the first sighting of the Lady in Grey by a janitor
at the Library, he would never returned to the library again.
You can
visit the official site of the Library at www.willard.lib.in.us
There are
two live cams at the Willard Library that you can watch and possibly
see the Lady in Gray. One cam is in the research room and the other
in the children's room. You can see them at the following URL: www.courierpress.com/ghost
