An excerpt from this book:

Mysterious Pact

Old Bill M. went to fish in Canso with only a leaky boat, because he had no money to buy a better one. But when he came home, he had enough to build a wharf, a big house, and a big fishing boat. Everyone claimed he had sold his soul to the Devil for a sou'wester full of money. After he came back from Canso, he was afraid to go out after dark. If he were in Hawkesbury, and it was late, he would beat his horse half to death to get home before dark.

Story told by Gordon Malcolm,Port Hawkesbury, N. S. (as told by his grandfather)
