Join Haunted Hamilton as we spend a haunted evening at Backus Mills Heritage Village and Conservation Area in Port Rowan, Ontario. At the beginning of the evening, you'll be able to explore the heritage village on your own and learn a bit about the area's vivid history!

"Truly a chance to step back in time for a glimpse of our pioneer past. The Village has more than a dozen restored or reconstructed buildings to explore. During the summer ans special events, pioneer tasks and trades are carried out within the Village. Step inside the grist mill and watch the miller at the grindstone. Today at Backus you can see exhibits and artifacts that bring to life the fascinating story of history in the Long Point Region Watershed."

 

As it gets darker and darker, the remainder of the evening will be enjoyed right in the middle of the dark forest around a blazing campfire, surrounded by the Pioneer Village. We will provide the marshmallows and hot dogs to roast as well as other tasty snacks including smores, Halloween candy and pop (all that good junk food you're allowed to eat at this time of year!)

And the best part, our Ghost Guides, Ms Catherine and Lady Jade will be there to tell you the creepiest ghost stories you've ever heard! Your Haunted Hamilton hosts, Stephanie and Daniel Cumerlato will also be there to tell some personal stories while encouraging others to share their own personal experiences. (Come prepared with a few stories of your own if you like!)

FYI: If you know where to look, you'll be able to find the original gravestonesof the Backus (Backhouse) family (ask Stephanie & Dan if youwant to be pointed in the right direction!)

Backus Mills Heritage Village and Conservation Area

You will be welcomed at the main gated entrance where you can check in.
You will then be directed to the back area where the Heritage Village is.

Directions and Map:

From Hamilton

- Take Hwy. 6 (starts off as Upper Jame) all the way through Caledonia, Hagersville and Jarvis.
- Go through Port Dover, then turn south (LEFT) on Hwy. 24.
- Follow Hwy. 24 for for 20 km.
- Turn LEFT onto Hwy.16 and follow down for 3 km.
- Turn right on Regional Road 42 (will also be called Queen St. W)
- Follow RR 42 for a short while (past E Quarter Line Rd), until you begin to see a bend in the road (bends left).
- There will be a RIGHT turn onto 2nd Concession Road (sharp little turn)
- Look to the right for Backus Mill Road. You'll see an entrance and the gatehouse

Please arrive at Backus Mills Conservation Area anywhere in between 6 - 7 p.m.
You must arrive during this time to check in.

What to bring:

  • lawn chairs to sit on
  • flashlight (for bathroom runs in the dark)
  • skewers or tree branches (to roast your marshmallows and hot dogs on - we will have these on hand too, but if you want your own, these can be purchased very inexpensively at a dollar store such as Dollarama, like 4 for $1)
  • warm blankets (it is supposed to be very cold, bring blankets to snuggle up under while hearing the creepy ghost stories!)
  • winter coats (same as above.. should be very cold)
  • your ghost stories! you will be encouraged to participate and share your own personal experiences and stories around the fire. Don't worry though, if you're shy, you can just sit back and listen :)

Where to Meet:

When you arrive at the entrance to Backus Mills, you'll see the front Gatehouse. Just drive past that down the road and follow it right to the main building, the Education Centre. This is where you can park for the evening (it is just a short walk from here to the Heritage Village). You'll need to check in at the registration desk so your name can be marked off and you can get your tickets.
