New for 2010: Willowbank Mansion & the Hamilton Family Graveyard
The Screaming Tunnel has been a right-of-passage for young adults of the Niagara region for over half a century. The origin of this unique tunnel is lost to history. Many have said it’s an old train tunnel that was never used, or a pathway into the town that used to stand in the woods behind. No matter what the history, the tunnel has gained a very haunted reputation over the years, including the famous legend of the little girl lit on fire by her crazed father. If you walk to the middle of the Screaming Tunnel and light a wooden match, you’ll hear the screams of the little girl and her ghostly breath will blow out the fire.
The Drummond Hill cemetery has ghosts … this is not because of those buried under its grounds, but instead due to the historic battle that was fought on Lundy’s Lane in the War of 1812. Over 200 perished on the land that is now Drummond Hill, and it’s here where we can trace the lineage of the ghosts. British soldiers have been seen wandering around graves into the late hours of the night. This stop will transport you back in time to experience the horrors of war.
The Old Stone Jug (Niagara ’s original Custom House) has a place in our hearts because we’re sorry to see it fade into decay. This beautiful building, designed by the same architect as Ottawa’s Parliament Buildings, has been abandoned for over 20 years. It has been a Custom House, a police station and even the filming location for Marilyn Monroe’s “Niagara”. The woman in white has been seen shining from the second floor even though the wood of that floor has been missing for years.
And to top the day off, we'll be heading over the border for an exclusive sunset tour and paranormal investigation of the historic and very haunted Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York! We'll have full interior access to the entire Castle - A French fort that dates back to 1726!
During this trip last year, we held a séance in the first floor room behind the famous well. It was interesting (and very spooky!), yielding results that couldn’t be denied. This was so successful that we have added an extra hour at the Fort!

The
Ghosts of Old Fort Niagara Castle
The French built the Old Fort starting with the Castle building in 1726. It’s known by all that enter of the many ghostly apparitions which wander the halls and rooms of this ancient castle. Candles have lit by invisible hands, ghostly shapes appear without faces, and even a few German shepherd ghosts howl from the night-time grounds.
The quiet serenity of Fort Niagara is ideal for ghostly experiences. Only the sound of your heart beat in your chest and the waves lightly caressing the shore accompany you.
The popular and legendary ghost that haunts Old Fort Niagara Castle is the headless French soldier. He first appeared in the 1830’s rising up from the well to scare the British and American soldier that would invade “his” home.
They say he was a French officer. During a party held with local native woman, two of the officers, drunk on wine, starting duelling for the heart of a beautiful girl. As he moved backwards down the spiral stairs, he lost his footing and fell head first to the stone flow. His friend drove a sword through the officer’s sternum.
Coming to his senses, the murderer began to dismember the body as to hide it. Starting with the head, he tossed it through a window and into Lake Ontario. It was then other soldier could be heard coming down the stairs. Panicked, he through the headless corpse into the deep, dark well.
And today, on nights of the full moon, you can see a headless body roam the castle in search of his head.
The chapel is also an eerie place at night. Nonexistent heavy benches are heard being dragged about. The ghosts here are restless. The toughest dogs will whimper when coming to the door of the chapel.
Not too many people are really brave enough to spend the night at Old Fort Niagara. Some have tried (ask about the reporter from a local paper) and failed. However, Haunted Hamilton is not afraid to bring you this rare opportunity to spend an evening in Western New York’s most haunted location! |
