The Black Lady in the Customs House
Hamilton, Ontario
by
Mr. Reiner Perski

I did some renovation work in the Customs House when it was being turned into a martial arts college. Several people reported
feeling strange in the basement, near the old vault. Others would sometimes think that they saw unaccountable shadows on the top floor. Several years ago I attended the Italian labour exhibit at the House, simply to see the display and to see the changes that were made in the architecture. As I was speaking to one
of the employees, he mentioned he had actually seen the Black Lady, who seemed annoyed at the changes taking place in her building. When he explained what the exhibit concerned, she smiled and disappeared. An interesting point concerning the apparition is that she may have been the wife of sea captain who worked in the House. It seems he had a mistress and murdered his wife when she discovered the affair, and then hid her body in the basement vault. Now, this is only a tale that was circulating, so I really can't verify its accuracy. Thought you might be interested in receiving this information.
