The Wake
Hamilton, Ontario
by
Nicole

When my mother and I were moving my step-father out of his house, I went to take out the packed boxes that were stacked in the living room. I noticed when I got into the center of the
room, I was over come by a chill. It wasn't like the room itself was cold, it was as if something was chilling me from the inside.
Suddenly, I couldn't stand being in that room and left, telling my mother that I would clean somewhere else.

Only after we moved him out, did mum tell me that one of the residents before him had died of cancer and her wake had been in the livingroom, her coffin positioned in the center of the room.
